The club went to Zeeland for a weekend.
As I, unfortunately, could not attend the whole event, I just went sundaymorning to meet the others.
What yesterday seemed not possible to them, could be done today. The windforce had decreased to a very acceptable level, so we headed for a tour at sea in the Voordelta: a very common tour to the sandplate "Aardappelenbult".
I recorded 5 highlights however:
- coming near the sandplate we crossed a kind of tidalrapid, on the edge of a shallow part, in which you should concentrate to keep the intended course in the head-current we were paddling. It was like paddling upstream a fast flowing river.
- playing in the surf at the NE-end of the "Aardappelenbult". Everybody played to his or hers abilities. Myself, I performed an "old-fashioned" duo-pirouette when a particularly steep wave put me on heels with the bow sky-high like a rocket. When the wave took me along in its "washermachine" this happened again. Although my wingpaddle played me a trick by twisting in my hands I stayed upright thanks to the perfect contact for knees and hips in this kayak. After this I just managed to turn the kayak and to land upside-up and paddle further as if nothing did happen. Nice experience. Good old AnasAcuta: she always likes stuff likes this
- Peter got a new girlfriend today: A particular seal was following him for miles when we followed the inside of the sandplate.
-
Our break on the sandplate was perfectly timed as the sun started shining in the end. Perfect for a "50+"-beauty-sleep. But also for some practice: As I paddled my AnasAcuta today, this break was the ultimate moment to try some Freya-techniques in the salt water where it should be easier. As the AnasAcuta makes laybacks easy on its flat afterdeck, it had been on my mind for some time to practice this. And YES !! It worked: I could float next to my kayak without sculling. I could even make the slow-motion roll down AND up again. Not as perfect (I mean: relaxed) as should be, but OK the beginning is there. I must confess that afterwards, at the end of the tour, it didn't work any more: so I have to practice more, that's for sure!
The sun is coming; clouds slowly drifting away
I hope Gilberts pictures were successfull: if yes, I add them afterwards.
- Playing at the SW-end of he plate: there were bigger seawaves to be found; just "on the edge" of tumbling over or not. Ideal surfwaves. One particular ride I shall not forget very easily as a wave pushed me at high speed over at least a 100 m's: the spray from the bow flying sideways: Beautiful sight!! What a Kayak!!
